Philadelphia On Street Parking
PPA’s On-Street Parking program creates sound parking regulations for each business and residential area. These regulations are tailored to accommodate the particular needs and uses of each block.
By working with businesses and residents we can understand the unique circumstances which exist in each area and tailor regulations to provide the maximum benefits.
We also establish regulations that improve public safety and efficient traffic flow. Loading zones are established to provide space for dropping off or picking up goods or people without blocking traffic.
No Stopping zones create clearance to increase both traffic and pedestrian safety. Rush hour clearance zones provide an additional travel lane to expedite the movement of traffic during peak periods.
PPA is responsible for the installation and maintenance of the 14,500 parking meters throughout the City. By using meters to set time limits, we increase the number of motorists who can use a single space during the course of a day.
That increases parking opportunities for everyone and supports the growth of business in our neighborhoods.
Meter regulations are only in effect at specific times and on specific days, as indicated on the signs posted on each block. If parking is prohibited during specific hours on a metered block, your vehicle will be in violation even if there is time displayed on the meter.
Electronic meters won’t operate during the restricted time and will display a flashing No Parking icon in the LCD window.
At times when metered parking is in effect, drivers must use a Smart Card or deposit coins in order to activate their meters.
If no money has been deposited, or when the time has elapsed, the meter will indicate that it is expired by:
- On the street side, the LCD will alternately display EXPIRED and 00:00 in red
- On the sidewalk side, the LCD will flash 00:00
All parking meters in Philadelphia can be activated with a Smart Card, quarters, nickels, dimes and dollar coins. The amount of time that each coin will purchase is indicated inside the front window of the meter. Our meters only accept US Currency.
